Audio Recorder

Updated 7 February 2026

Audio Recorder can be installed with a PPA, at least until Linux Mint 23 comes around. The Cinnamon edition of Linux Mint is what I'm using now.

Install From the PPA

At the terminal:

    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/audio-recorder
    sudo apt update
    sudo apt install audio-recorder

If the current version of Ubuntu isn't supported, download this file, and see if it works.

If it doesn't, my page for Distrobox explains how to get it installed in a container.

Use 320 CBR for MP3 Files

Within the application, select "Additional Settings" and then "Recording Commands".

Select the Title of "MP3 Lossy 44KHz" and replace the command with this:

    audio/x-raw,rate=44100,channels=2 ! lamemp3enc name=enc target=bitrate cbr=true bitrate=320

Restart the application, and ensure it still shows the new command.

Record From Spotify

Audio Recorder should offer Spotify as a source as long as Spotify is launched, at least once, before Audio Recorder.

The best way to record multiple songs is to save them to a playlist and download them (premium subscription). With Audio Recorder engaged, click on the first song to play, and it should automatically start recording.

Recording this way isn't perfect, but it should be good enough. I've done this for more than a couple of years. I only get the premium subscription when I've built up a long playlist, one month at a time.
