Virtual Machine Manager
Updated 28 January 2026
There are at least four different virtual machine software packages available for Linux. This is one of them, also called "virt-manager". It's easy to install it from the standard software repository. If you intend to have it accessible from other machines on the local area network, you also need to do this in the terminal:
sudo apt install bridge-utils
After Installation
My username has to be added to the libvirt group. At the terminal:
sudo usermod -aG libvirt $USER
VirtualBox Is Better
That's not saying much. The Debian version of virt-manager is one full version behind. I installed a Linux distribution and Windows 11 Professional on VirtualBox, and I had absolutely no issues with either. The same Linux distribution worked well enough on virt-manager, but I could not get it display at the full resolution for Windows.
